ABOUT
Matthew McVey-Lee is a Astoria, New York based director and sometimes producer.
He has had many opportunities to work closely with playwrights in developing new work. Especially with the Linnell Festival of New Plays (Artistic Director Gregory Moss) and MFA candidate playwrights (Rafael Gallegos, Denise Hinson, Kevin R. Elder, and Rebecca Sanchez).
Matthew cofounded and produces with THREE. A performance group “developing an identity around the creation of new works, experimentation in forms and genre, and producing theatre with our distinctive voice” THREE has produced several full-length plays (An Iliad by Lisa Peterson and Denis O’Hare and Cassandra by collective members, and the upcoming How the Stars Used to Shine by Michelle Lawson and Jenny Hoffmann). They continue creating new works and small theatrical experiments (Kitchen Theatre).
Before moving to New York Matthew had opportunity to work with companies throughout New Mexico including Tricklock Company, Fusion, The Linnell Festival of New Plays, The Vortex Theatre, and SCRAP Productions. Noteworthy productions include Eurydice by Sarah Ruhl, Cassandra by Jenny Hoffmann and Yolanda Knight, The Marriage Proposal by Anton Chekov, and Es por eso by Rafeal Gallegos.
He received a BA in Theatre from the University of New Mexico in 2013.
As president of SCRAP Productions Matthew founded “Out of Order” a ten-minute play festival now in its fifth year and initiated ArtsUnexpected a UNM campus wide event featuring over 250 artists from every Department in the College of Fine Arts in over 50 art happenings.
